The Lip Filler Procedure: Step by Step

A topical numbing cream is applied to make the injections comfortable. Most patients report feeling pressure but not sharp pain. The actual injection process takes ten to fifteen minutes. Your injector may use a cannula, a blunt-tipped instrument that reduces bruising, or a very fine needle depending on the treatment plan.

After your injections, your injector will gently massage the area to ensure the filler is distributed evenly. You will be able to see the results immediately, though there will be some swelling that peaks at about twenty-four hours and subsides over the following few days. The final settled result will be visible after approximately two weeks once all swelling has resolved.

Recovery and Aftercare

Expect some swelling, tenderness, and possibly minor bruising for the first two to three days. Apply ice wrapped in a cloth for short periods to reduce swelling. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and blood-thinning medications like aspirin or ibuprofen for twenty-four hours before and after treatment to minimize bruising. Avoid kissing, drinking through straws, and putting pressure on your lips for the first day. Do not apply lipstick or lip products for at least twelve hours after the injection sites have closed.
